Harivansh Rai Bacchan’s Madhushala – Translated Verses 1 – 5

(These verses are not meant to be taken literally. :-D.
Wine is the spirit that ebbs and flows through us,
makes us sentient. Tavern is this world. )

With grapes of feelings tender, sweet, I offer this wine,
This cup, my own hands fill to offer, dear love of mine.
First, I offer this libation to you, the world shall abide,
My tavern will honor you first, a welcome so sublime.

To quench your thirst, I’ll melt this world into a wine,
I’ll dance on a toe, as a hostess, bearing this cup of mine,
Life’s nectar I’ve long bestowed upon you, a gift divine,
Today, I’ll yield this world – a tavern, for you, to shine.

Dear one, you are my chalice, I’m but your thirsting wine,
By pouring yourself into me, you turn drinker of divine,
I brim and spill you joyfully, you dance in mirth & shine,
To each, we become other’s tavern now, oh dear of mine.

From vines of feeling, I distill imagination’s wine,
The poet, now a hostess, brings a cup of verse divine,
Never empty, even by a drop, though thousands sip & shine,
‘You’, the readers are the revelers, this book a tavern of mine.

From sweet emotions, everyday I distill nectar of this wine,
With this mellow spirit, I fill the cup of my soul divine,
With imagination as my hands, I raise it and drink till I do shine,
Within me, I’m a hostess, a drinker, this tavern is all mine.
