The Best 97 Seconds of My Life

My heart gave a shudder and stopped.
The world from my body was dropped—
I fell through the floor
Through a bright, silent door,
And knew that my life had been swapped.

I saw not a fire or a throne,
But a light that was kind and my own.
A warmth held me near
And banished all fear—
A peace I had never been shown.

I hovered outside on the air,
Detached from the chaos down there.
They cursed and they cried
As I drifted aside,
With a quiet and calm in my hair.

I wanted to stay in that place,
Safe in the glow of its grace.
Instead I was brought
To the battles I fought—
To the cold, lonely lines on my face.

The light began fading away,
Resisting the pull of the gray.
With a jolt and a shock
On a hard, sterile dock,
I was dragged to the heavy, dull day.

The doctors, they tapped on my chest,
Dismissing the whole thing as rest—
A fluke in the wire,
A spark without fire.
They claim that my brain did the rest.

So now when I’m stuck in a line,
Or the weather is far from divine,
I slip through the cracks
Of these physical tracks
And for ninety-seven seconds, I’m whole.
